Provides a copy of his orders to Captain Major Jacob Henniker of HMS Mermaid.
Knowing that Lieutenant Colonel Bourke has been employed in a confidential situation with the Spanish army Loring believes that communications Bourke makes to His Majesties Ministers must be important so he has taken charge of the convoy of HMS Mermaid and sent her to England.
John Wentworth Loring, HMS Niobe, 20 July 1809 writes to Captain Henniker, HMS Mermaid, that Lieutenant Colonel Bourke has informed him that he is carrying dispatches for government ministers from the commander in chief of the British army in Portugal. He orders Henniker to take Bourke on board for a passage to England leaving his convoy in the care of Loring himself.
