Folios 178- 179: Samuel Hood Linzee, HMS Barfleur, at sea.
Folio 178: Refers to an enclosed memorial from Mrs M L Dering, widow of Thomas Dering, who was drowned when lieutenant of Marines in HMS Circe in the West Indies in May 1807. She asks for her son to be admitted to the Greenwich School.
Folio 179: P C Durham, HMS Renown, Gibraltar Bay, 10 October 1808 certifies that Lieutenant Dering of the Royal marines served on board HMS Anson for two or three years with great propriety.
Folio 180-181: enclosure with folios 178-179. A petition by Mary Linzee Dering, widow of Thomas Dering, who lost his life at Tortola having been sent by Captain Jonas Rose of HMS Circe to take possession of a prize. She provides details of the accident and of her family situation.
Folios 182-183: enclosure with folios 178-179. Unsigned undated note referring to Mrs Dering's request and refers it to Mr Dyer. She appears to be aware of the Compassionate List for orphans at the school.
