Folios 170-171: William Granville Lobb, HMS Pomone, in the Tagus above Fort St Julien. He reports that Topaze French Frigate, being in perfect readiness for Sea, and the chance of not falling in with her,"those long dark nights" cruising off the Bar, where he has been for some time past. He thought it prudent to take this anchorage so as to insure our getting out before her, having made the arrangements with Lord Robert Fitzgerald in the event of the neutrality of the Port being claimed by the French Minister, that he will return for answer HMS Pomone is going immediately to Sea. He intends remaining so as to insure the safety of the Convoy. He acknowledges receipt of your letter dated 22 November 1805 directing him to order HMS Avon to join Lord Cuthbert Collingwood [(1st Baron Collingwood, of Caldburne and Hethpool)].
