Folios 64-65: Walter Lock, Sea Fencibles, Berwick upon Tweed: Reply to their letter dated 14 January 1805 with its enclosures. He informs that there has been no luger on this coast but that an old sloop certainly landed part of his cargo on the 31 December 1804 in this bay and other parts of the coast, and he has no doubts but they were assisted by some of the Sea Fencibles, who they are he cannot find out; The Custom House Officers tell him when they are fortunate enough to fall in with any of them with contraband goods. A Cutter Commanded by an active Officer and well acquainted with this coast might prevent a deal of smuggling and occasionally pick up some men. A Press Gang as suggested by the author of the letter would in his opinion be of no use.
