Description

Folios 10-11: William Luke, Sea Fencibles, Falmouth. Reports as directed on 15 January 1805 he has made enquiries at the different Signal Stations within his District relating to Signals made on 10 January 1805 and enclose a letter which he today received from Captain Michael Halliday by which it appears that a mistake must have happened either at Tregonning Hill or Tetter-dien [Tetterdien].

Folios 12-13: enclosure with folios 10-11. Letter dated 19 January 1805 by Michael Halliday, Penzance, to William Luke, Sea Fencibles, Falmouth. Acknowledge receipt of a copy of an Admiralty letter dated 15 January 1805. Making enquiries on Signals No 46, 6 & 35 said to have originated at the Lands End. In answer he informs on the source of the mistake. By the journal on Tregonning Hill he found that on the 10 January 1805 they repeated the signals No 10, 46 & 36 from Tetter-dien [Tetterdien]; on the contrary Lieutenant Grant of Tetter-dien [Tetterdien] declares his signals to have been No 10, 52 being second signals for Merchant men to denote enemy's small cruise and No 36 - From which the only conclusion he can draw is, either Tregonning Hill mistook 2n 52 for 46 or else Tetter-dien [Tetterdien] in a hurry of changing the signal from No 52 to 36 they may have hoisted it before they had shifted the Pendant in the place of the Flag. Lands End is perfectly clear of blame, on the contrary to his diligence is to be attributed the recapture of the coaster taken by a Privateer at the time. He recommends a telescope of better quality for Tregonning Hill.
