Folios 358-359: Henry Fyge Jauncey, HMS Hope, Woolwich. Advising that the ship's gunner, Thomas Evans, has been invalided as unfit for active service and Thomas Gayton has been appointed to supersede him. But Gayton is 43 and complains of pain 'in his loins' rendering him unable to bear the least wetting, which of course he constantly experiences in this class of vessel. He also says he had been previously invalided as fit only for harbour duty and had been therefore removed from HMS Alert by Captain Smith. Asks that another warrant officer be appointed in Gayton's stead.
