Description

Folios 34-35: George Matthew Jones, HMS Tuscan, Gibraltar Bay. He has only just received Mr Croker's letter of 16 August 1814, asking for information as to the R against the name of Frederick Luckraft on the ship's books. Says he has no knowledge of the circumstances, as it took place under his predecessor, Captain John Wilson.

Folios 36-37: enclosure with folios 34-35. From Anne Luckraft, widow of John Luckraft, late master cooper at Plymouth victualling office. Saying since the death of her husband she is destitute and with a large family to care for. Her son Frederick had been midshipman of the schooner, Pickle, which was wrecked on the coast of Spain, so he was sent to the Tuscan. Unfortunately he had incurred the displeasure of her captain, and when some men were impressed from a Guernsey vessel, the Alfred, the captain of the Tuscan discharged him into that ship, at the same time marking him Run - she insists that the master and crew of the Alfred would corroborate this. Subsequently, while returning to England in the Alfred in November 1810, her son was washed overboard and perished. She herself is now being threatened with debtors' prison and begs that her son's wages from the Pickle and Tuscan may be sent to relieve her.
