Description

Folios 20-21: Charles Thomas Jones, HMS Harrier, Santa Cruz, Tenerife. Advising of his arrival here, and sending a copy of a letter from Mr Duplan, the British Consul giving details of a recent mutiny, which meant he felt the Harrier should stay to offer its protection. It concerns the Francis & Eliza convict ship, master William Harrison, currently under quarantine. The mutiny came about after she had been captured and plundered by an American privateer, the Warrior. Jones has taken charge of her and has ordered a court martial to take place. There follow detailed letters about the situation and events.

Folios 22-23: enclosure with folios 20-21. Captain Jones writes a letter dated 19 January 1815 about the state of the Francis & Eliza, to Lieutenant R. W. James, giving a full list of her provisions of all kinds.

Folios 24-25: enclosure with folios 20-21. From Consul John Duplan dated 19 January 1815, advising that the convict ship Canada and her consort the Francis & Eliza had arrived from Cork under convoy of HMS Valiant. Gives details of the capture of the Francis & Eliza, and of another brig in the same convoy, the Hope. Reverse of Folio 24 has letter from William Harrison with details of the capture and subsequent mutiny; folio 25 shows letter from Lieut. Suckling of the Canada, asking that a court martial may take place, also a letter from Captain Jones in reply suggesting how to proceed. Reverse of folio 25 shows letters from two officers of the Francis & Eliza complaining of their men, and a letter from Jones, saying they are culpable for not setting a guard to keep the men from obtaining liquor, and must make every effort to restore order.

Folios 26-29: enclosure with folios 20-21. Folio 26 is a duplicate of Captain Jones's original letter on folio 20. On the reverse of folio 26 is a duplicate of the letter from Mr Duplann (folio 24) and a duplicate of the letter from William Harrison (reverse of fo. 24); folio 27 has another letter from William Harrison giving a much longer and more detailed account of the capture and subsequent events. Folio 27 reverse has a letter from the consul general, commending Jones's actions and asking him to continue his overseeing of the Francis & Eliza to ensure everyone's safety. Folio 28 duplicates letter from Lieutenant Suckling and the response from Jones (both on fo. 25), also the two letters from ensigns on the Francis & Eliza, with the response of Jones (reverse of fo. 25). On reverse of folio 28: a letter from one of HM officials commending Jones's actions to date and offering every assistance; also a duplicate of Jones's letter (on folios 22-23), with the accompanying lists of provisions in the Francis & Eliza. Folio 29 has a letter from Jones to Captain Paterson, advising that he has on board the Harrier, the first Mate and four men from the Francis & Eliza and that he took them from their ship at the request of Mr Harrison, the Master, who said they were guilty of plundering and embezzlement, also a sergeant of marines complained of by Ensign Stedman. Reverse of folio 29 has a letter from Captain William Paterson, of HMS Myrmidon, commending the steps taken by Jones and asking him to remain in situ to protect both the convict ships until the return of Captain George Lennock of HMS Esk, who will take charge of the situation.
