Description

Folios 258-259: Joseph James, HMS Kite, Flemish Roads, Gottenburg [Gothenburg]. He states for information he encloses the letter sent to him by J Smith Esq His Majesty's Consul at Gottenburg. It has been currently reported some time past, that a Danish Line of Battle Ship with some smaller vessels was effected from Copenhagen to cruise in the S in order to intercept our Trade and this day he has given instructions to the Swedish Brig Wilhelmina Frederica from a Port in the River Christiana, cleared from hence for Lisbon but in fact bound to Leith and put in here for Convoy. the master of which declares he left his anchorage in Christiana the 4 January 1808 and that he had been informed by good authority, that a Danish Line of Battle Ship with some small vessels, was daily expected to cruise between the s and the Coast of Norway, in order to protect their own Trade, and to intercept the English. This confirms the information in Mr Fenwick's Letter.

Folios 260-261: enclosure with folios 258-259. Letter dated 4 January 1808 by Charles Fenwick, Helsingborg, to John Smith, [Gottenburg]. He has been informed by Boatmen belonging to this Town who came from Elsinore last night that Danish Line of Battle Ship and two small Armed Vessels passed through the Sound yesterday evening in the dusk for the Cattergat [Kattegat], People who have arrived here this morning from Hveen [Hven] Island say that these Ships passed by that Island yesterday but that the weather was so foggy they could not distinguish of what nation they were.
