Is sending an affidavit pf Robert Armstrong of Hartley certifying that James Long was a Carpenter on the Juno despite which he was impressed and is now detained on board HMS Mosquito [Musquito]. He trusts the Admiralty will order his discharge
Folios 274-275: enclosure with folios 272-273. Affidavit sworn on 1 October 1805 by Robert Armstrong of Hartley, Northumberland, at North Shields before Robert Ramshaw, Commissioner. He is the owner of the Juno and about last February he hired James Long to be the Carpenter of the ship. He continued in this service until he was impressed. On 17 March [1805] the Juno was boarded on her passage from London to Hartley by people belonging to HMS Mosquito [Musquito] and carried on board that ship where he is now detained against his will. He has received a letter from him asking him to procure his discharge. James Long has not entered HM service nor received any Bounty.
Folios 276-277: enclosure with folios 270-271. Copy of undated letter from Samuel Jackson to John Barrow. Replies to enquiry of 10 April [1805] to state the case of James Long. He was impressed as he did not match the description in the affidavit produced and also because of the improper conduct of the Master of the Juno which obliged them to chase her for several hours and fire shots at him in order to bring him to. Given the doubtfulness of the affidavit produced and the fact that James Long has no wife or family to support and as he is over 6 feet tall he considered him a proper subject for service.
