Description

Folios 256-257: Samuel Jackson, HMS Mosquiito [Musquito], Grimsby Roads. Replies to enquiry of 1 July [1805] to state the case of William Howard, a Sea Fencible, with an application from Mr Fenn for his discharge. he stated the case on 9 [July 1805] and received directions to discharge him, provided he was not a Seaman. As he has been at sea over 17 years and is fit for HM service he considered himself justified in detaining him.

Folios 258-259: enclosure with folios 256-257. Letter date 31 July 1805 from J Fenn, Woodbridge, to Sir Evan Nepean, Admiralty Office, London. Last year he addressed him on behalf of Mr Payne whose son was impressed and he procured his discharge. He appeals to him again on behalf of William Howard impressed some weeks ago from the Cere, Captain Graystone of Woodbridge, trading to Newcastle and sent on board HMS Musquito cruising off Yarmouth. He has been impressed 4 times in the past few years from these little trading vessels. He has a wife and family, has lost the sight of one eye and had the protection of Captain Edge of the Sea Fencibles of which he was one. He is very well respected locally. The late and most worthy P B Brooke of Nacton some years ago procured his discharge from the Admiralty.
