Description

Folios 236-237: Samuel Jackson, HMS Mosquiito [Musquito], Yarmouth Roads. Replies to enquiry of 24 June [1805] to state the case of Peter Allardice recently impressed and serving on board his ship. He knows that it is common practice amongst shipping on the norther coast of England to bind apprentices a second time and he thinks Peter Allardice is one such apprentice. He was said to have been at sea only 17 or 18 months and consequently he gave orders for him to do his duty in the waist but the next morning he went to the 1st Lieutenant and begged to be allowed to do his duty in the tops. He has since performed that duty in such a way to convince him it could not have been learnt in so short a time and that either he had been at sea before the date of his indenture, or that this is the second apprenticeship. He appears to be more that 18 years of age. The protection granted might therefore have been obtained after he had served his first apprenticeship.

Folios 238-239: enclosure with folios 236-237. Letter dated 21 June 1805 from Thomas Ferguson, 3 George Yard, Lombard Street, [London]. Is sending the indenture [not present] of Peter Allardice and protection [not present] granted which he trusts will cause his discharge. He was impressed on 11 [June 1805] and is detained on board HMS Mosquito [Musquito] gun brig.
