Description

Folios 230-231: Samuel Jackson, HMS Mosquito [Musquito], Yarmouth Roads. Replies to the enquiry of 15 June [1805] to state the case of Thomas Robotham, a boy about 15 who deserted from HMS Mosquito [Musquito] at Yarmouth last May when on shore on HM business. He was rated amongst the 2nd Class boys and despite being on board 4 or 5 years neither his age nor size entitled him to any other rating except 1st Class boys which would have been done at the first vacancy.

Folios 232-233: enclosure with folios 230-231. Undated letter from S H Standenmayer to Sir Phillip Stevens. Thomas Robotham entered HMS Kent in April 1799 and was drafted about 9 months ago on board HMS Muscato [Musquito] now lying in Yarmouth Roads. He left without leave about one month ago and yesterday was met and detained by one of the Surgeons of the ship and sent to the [word deleted] where he remains. He is about 16. He left the ship because he received no more wages than when he first entered. He is now an Ordinary Seaman and expected wages as such. When his case was stated to Lord Ranelagh, he told him to inform you of it and that you would have the goodness to get him relief. He has no objection to going in any of HM ships to any part of the world.
