Description

Folios 226-227: Samuel Jackson, HMS Mosquiito [Musquito], Yarmouth Roads. Replies to enquiry of 1 July [1805] to state the case of Boat Steerers and Seamen impressed from, the Lively Greenland ship on her passage home. As regards the Seamen he has always considered that after the ship had made her voyage and was in a place of safety it has been customary to impress people especially as they are so much needed for HM service. he was not quite so clear how far he was justified in impressing the Boat Steerers. He met with Captain Mackay of HMS Scout and saw part of the correspondence between him and the Admiralty which expressed strong disapproval. He therefore lost no time sending the 5 Boat Steerers on shore at Whitby. He boarded a Greenland ship at nearly the same time and found that the boat steerers, line coilers and seamen, in total 24, had taken the boats from their ship by force that morning and landed, choosing not to trust their protections.

Folios 228-229: enclosure with folios 226-227. Petition dated 29 June 1805 from Richard Moorson, Whitby, to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. he is the owner of the Lively recently returned from a voyage to the Greenland seas. Officers and Seamen employed in the Greenland whale fishery are protected by Acts of Parliament. Despite this exemption Lieutenant Hall and part of the crew belonging to HMS Mosquito [Musquito], Captain Jackson Commander, went on board the Lively on 19 [June 1805] when she was on passage home to Whitby and impressed and carried away 5 boat steerers, William Moor, William Young, James Charter, William Wilson and William Armstrong, and 5 Seamen, John Holdforth, Joseph Britton, William Webster, Daniel Ibbetson and William Parker all of whom had protections granted by Customs Officers at Whitby prior to the Lively sailing from there last March. Asks for their discharge.
