Folios 191-192: Richard Janverin, HMS Pluto, Falmouth. Receipt of letter of 18 November [1804] informing him that his letter of 5 [November 1804] written to Admiral Montague about his having had Serjeant Owens of the Marines to be disrated and flogged was sent to their Lordships by Major General Elliott commanding the Royal Marines at Portsmouth and that they disapprove of his conduct. His ignorance of the Marine Regulations caused him to deviate from what he now understands are the rules of the service. Having never served in England and having been most of the time employed on detached duty he has not received the knowledge of the usages and customs of the navy most other Officers would have. He disrated him acted in the same way he would have done for a Quarter Master of Boatswain's Mate before punishing them. He regrets incurring their displeasure and hopes they will overlook the past.
