Folios 145-146: Henry Inman, HMS Triumph, Spithead. He has just received the enclosed letter and has no other means of relieving the distress of a brave man other than forwarding it to his Lordship who will see the high opinion Colonel Steward [Stewart] had of his conduct. He recalls not only Colonel Steward [Stewart] but also Lord Nelson and Captain Walker speak strongly in favour of his correct and brave conduct. He feels sure that his present situation will be attended to and an order for his discharge will be granted.
Folios 147-148: enclosure with folios 145-146. Letter dated 12 May 1805 from James Prendergast to Captain Inman, HMS Triumph, He was a Lieutenant in the Rifle Corps and Commanded a part of that regiment on board HMS Isis when he [Inman] came to her support in the action off Copenhagen. Soon after his arrival in England he was removed to the 68th Regiment and having absented himself from that regiment without leave he was superceded. He went to Guernsey and lived in a mercantile house until a week ago when he was induced to try his fortune in a privateer going on a cruise. he was scarcely on board when all hands were impressed. Colonel Stewart is now out of England and he does not know Captain Walker's address. He has no doubt that either of them would get him out of this situation. He has often seen him on board HMS St George and was on board his frigate in Copenhagen Roads. Asks him to intercede on his behalf. Refers him to a copy of a letter he received from Colonel Stewart, Colonel of the Rifle Corps, dated 29 May, London. Lieutenant Prendergast late of the 68th regiment applied to him for a testimonial of his conduct under his command. His conduct whilst in the Rifle Corps was that of an Officer and a gentleman. He distinguished himself at the battle of Copenhagen on board HMS Isis in command of a detachment of his regiment, his Senior Officer having been killed early in the battle. Postscript that when he was brought on board the Guard ship he called himself James Hill by which name he is now on the ship's books.
