Folios 243-244: Jonathan Joyce, HMS Discovery (Bomb [Vessel]), Nore. Covering letter for the enclosed Report of the Ship's Surgeon of the Hurts of Mr James Rees, Master's Mate. His reasons for not applying for a Pension in consequence of his Smart Ticket, were, he understood there was no probability of his getting more as a Petty Officer that Five Pounds Per Annum, which would very little benefit him. He [Jonathan Joyce] has frequently wished him to pass his Examination for a Lieutenant, but he has never applied for leave; the principal reason he [Jonathan Joyce] believes is a Certificate he had from Captain Ferris of HMS Inflexible, for three years and a half Servitude, being lost or mislaid at the Admiralty where he lodged all his Certificates previous to his being appointed a Midshipman of HMS Amazon by their Lordships during the Peace.
Folio 245: enclosure with folios 243-244. A L Jack, Surgeon, HMS Discovery. Reports of the Survey on Mr James Rees, Master's Mate of HMS Discovery. Dated 29 December 1803.
