Description

Folios 36-37: John Inglis, HMS Belliqueux, the Nore. Is sending the evidence against Bryan McDonough for acts of mutiny. On 29 May 1797, McDonough led others onto the quarterdeck and insisted that the ship put into Yarmouth. The next day he demanded that Inglis and the Officers take the ship to Nore which was refused so the crew took the ship there themselves. He threatened Inglis that he would be confined to his cabin if he talked to the crew. He also seized and opened letters and a newspaper from Inglis. One of the letters was asking for a pardon for the crew from Inglis. He also saw that a blue flag was flying as some of the crew wanted to return to their duty but he insisted that a red flag was flown. He ordered a pinnace and went aboard HMS Sandwich. He said he was in command of the ship and had great influence with the crew. The names of the Officers are listed below but they can only confirm part of what happened because they were confined. They are Lieutenants Robert England, Charles Cameron, Thomas Mills Holmes, Henry Squire, James Casell and Robert Pinkerton, Master Joseph Behenna, Surgeon William Hill and Purser Francis Francillon. Inglis suggests that depositions are taken from the crew about what happened but not at the moment. Robert Parker Gunner has been sent ashore because he threatened to fire on the barge carrying McDonough ashore as confirmed by the evidence of Henry Parsons, Marine and Alexander Lowe, Gunner.

Folio 38: enclosure with folios 36-38. John Inglis, HMS Belliqueux, the Nore. List of people involved in the mutiny. Bryan McDonough from Dingwall, Ireland sent to HMS Republic and Robert Preston from Dublin sent to the military at Sheerness.
