Bill was promoted by South Midland Railway in 1845 but was rejected by House of Commons in 1846. Midland Railway Company purchased assets of South Midland Railway, together with those of Leicester and Bedford Railway, Midland Railway Company undertaking to promote Bill in 1847 for construction of line which would follow route of Leicester and Bedford Railway. Midland company obtained these powers but abandoned them on account of financial difficulties. Scheme was actually revived by Midland company in 1853, and line completed from Wigston to Hitchin in 1857.
