Folios 427-428: J. M. Lewis, HMS Snake, Dungeness Roads. He has persevered as log as possible to keep his station, but has had to anchor. Once the weather permits he will proceed to Havre. The ship fitting in the next port appears to be a Merchant ship. The men of war remain in their usual state but all unrigged. There are six corvettes on the stocks, one ready to launch, the others to be planked up. He acknowledges the letter just arrived by fly cutter. P.S. He reports that he will be detained to secure the Bowsprit.
Folio 429: enclosure with folios 427-428. Survey dated 3rd December 1799 by William Forster Carpenter HMS Snake to Captain John Mason Lewis, HMS Snake. Defects of the ship listed.
