Description

Folios 172-173: Charles Henry Lane, HMS Prudent, Hamoaze. Encloses a petition from the Mates and Midshipmen of HMS Prudent and HMS Caton.

Folios 174-175: enclosure with folios 172-173. Petition dated 11October 1798 from [..] Master's Mate, John Abram and Samuel Mattheson, Midshipmen, HMS Prudent and James Scott, Master's Mate, John Searle and William Periam, Midshipmen, HMS Caton. They understand that the ships have been reduced and their pay will be reduced from 3rd Rate to 6th Rate. The pay they derive from serving in prison ships is their only support, having no prospect of prize money or other advantages arising from actual sea service. Their service is equally, if not more, fatiguing and troublesome than actual service at sea. With respect they request directions to be given to restore their pay to the late establishment of a 3rd Rate from the time of the ships being reduced.
