Description

Folios 505-506: Charles Lock, HMS Inspector, Sheerness Harbour. Reports he has just received the Admiralty letter enclosing a copy of the court of enquiry held on Sergeant Bambrick of the 17th Dragoon Guards for his behaviour towards the Second Lieutenant and boat's crew of the Inspector. Believes this should have been a court martial for the events aboard the Sally transport, asks the Admiralty to order this.

Folios 507-508: enclosure with folios 505-506. Letter dated 17 November 1797 from Lieutenant John Worrall, HMS Inspector, Yarmouth Roads to Commander Charles Lock. Describes the events aboard the Sally transport when he went aboard to press men as she was coming up the River Thames and encountered resistance, first from the Pilot, who said the vessel would be in danger if any crew were taken off, and subsequently from a Sergeant who swore to prevent any men from being pressed. At Lieutenant Worrall's insistence, the Army Lieutenant in charge of the party put the Sergeant under arrest and promised he would be punished. One of the boat's crew, William Crummy, reported he had been struck, but could not point out the man who did it.

Folio 509: enclosure with folios 505-506. Affidavit sworn by seamen William Crummy and John Thompson of HMS Inspector before Commander Charles Lock and Master Henry Gooch, not dated. Crummy swears that on 16 July he was with a boat's crew commanded by Lieutenant John Worrall which boarded the Sally transport as she was coming up to the Hope. They were surrounded by soldiers on the Forecastle who objected to their pressing any men and Crummy says he was struck and his cutlass taken from his hands. An Army Sergeant was abusive towards Lieutenant Worrall. Thompson swears that the Sergeant told his men to clear the seamen off the Forecastle.
