Description

Folios 473-474: Charles Lock, Salopian Coffee House, Whitehall. Encloses an account of the mutiny aboard HMS Inspector which he has written from memory. Reports that Mr Stoker, the Purser, shot himself on Sunday and that he believes it was because of embarrassment over money matters. The Delegates and Committee of the crew asked Commander Lock for a certificate to say that they were not involved in his death, which he has given them.

Folios 475-478: enclosure with folios 473-474. Detailed account , not dated, by Commander Charles Lock of the mutinous events aboard HMS Inspector from the time she arrived in Yarmouth Roads on 27 May until he was sent ashore on 13 June, including the demand that Thomas Potts and the other three men who had previous been arrested for mutiny be returned to the ship. Ships mentioned, HMS Nassau, HMS Standard, HMS Lion, HMS Belliqueux, HMS Montagu, HMS Sandwich. Places mentioned: Shields, Holland, London. Folios 479-480: enclosure with folios 473-474. Petition dated 13 June 1797 and signed"We the Seamen of the Inspector", addressed to the Admiralty. State that they have been forced by the delegates of the fleet to send their Captain ashore and that from the time of their arrival in Yarmouth Roads they have been forced to take part in the mutiny by the crew of the larger warships in the North Sea Fleet. Ask for a pardon.

Folios 481-481A: enclosure with folios 473-474. Letter, not dated, from First Lieutenant Nathaniel France to Commander Charles Lock, HMS Inspector. Reports he cannot account for the crew joining the mutiny except that they were moored too close to HMS Standard and influenced by that crew's behaviour. They hoisted the (Red) Flag, took the arms chests from the Quarterdeck and demanded the keys to the Magazine. Believes that tomorrow the whole squadron will sail for the Nore. Delegates from the Standard and HMS Lion came aboard saying they were determined to have the four men who were suspected of mutiny and left aboard HMS Nonsuch at Hull returned to the ship. Master's Mate Wilson and Midshipman Connor are being sent ashore, Mr McCormick can give him further details.
