Originally incorporated as Nuneaton and Hinckley Railway by act of 18 August 1850, for single line of railway, 4½ miles in length.

By act of 14 June 1860, company was authorised to change its name to South Leicestershire Railway, extending its line from Hinckley to Wigston Magna, Midland Railway. Company was later vested in London and North Western Railway (by virtue of 30-31 Vic cap.244). Latter became part of London, Midland and Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922, dated 30 December 1922.
