Description

Folios 517-518: William Luke, HMS Caroline. Orders from Admiral George Vandeput, HMS St Albans, in the River Tagus. To William Luke, HMS Caroline. By the Command of Vice Admiral John Stephen. [Total of three sides], Orders to proceed in HMS Caroline with HMS Druid off Oporto where you are to take under your charge such Ships and Vessels whose Commanders are ready and willing to proceed under your Convoy; should the number of of vessels which may be ready, not be able to get over the Bar at once, you are to allow such reasonable time as may be necessary for the remainder to join you. Once at Spithead you are to give notice with a list of the vessels to the Admiralty. You are to the most expedition in taking on board such stores as may be necessary to complete them to six months & to take over & above four months provisions (to which time you are by your former orders, directed to Victual) as much more provisions as you can conveniently stow (except of wine or Brandy) for the use of such of His Majesty's Ships on this Station as may be in want of them. You are to bring under Convoy any Ships and Vessels at, or near Spithead and bound to the Coast of Portugal. [Etc. etc. etc.].
