Folios 488-489: Richard Lucas, HMS Arrogant, Madras Roads. Covering letter for the enclosed [not present] copy of a dispatch received from Rear Admiral Rainier by HMS Orpheus which arrived here the 20 June 1796 with the loss of her Bowsprit, head and part of her stern. Admiral Peter Rainier's Dispatches he made to send under cover to Rear Admiral Sir George Keith Elphinstone to the Cape of Good Hope by Captain Aiken Commander of HMS Echo, who arrived here in HMS Carysfort 9 June 1796 after touching at the Cape the 20 April 1796 at which place the Senior Officer took a Copy of their Lordships Dispatches sent by Captain Murray which must have been received by the Admiral some time ago as he sailed from hence the 22 March 1796 for the Cape. He supposes that HMS Stately, HMS Sphynx, HMS Echo and HMS Rattlesnake are with him. There remains here now HMS Arrogant, HMS Orpheus HMS Carysfort & HMS Heroine. [he explains his intentions with the remaining ships].
