Description

Folios 102-103: George William Henry Knight, HMS Surprise at seas. Enclosing an appointment from Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, senior officer on the coast of Africa ordering him to act as captain of HMS Astrea following the death of John Eveleigh in battle off the island of St Jago Cape de Verde on 23 January 1814.After, he was directed to resume command of the Surprise in expectation of falling in with and capturing the enemy's frigates still on the coast and the Astrea being in a defective state. He asks to be promoted to Post rank.

Folios 104-105: enclosure with folios 102-103. Letter dated 1 February 1814 from John Borlase Warren, Bermuda to George William Henry Knight, HMS Romulus to act as captain of HMS Surprise during the absence of Sir Thomas John Cochrane on leave.

Folios 106-106: enclosure with folios 102-103. Letter dated 17 March 1814 from Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn at St Jago to Knight, HMS Surprise. Following the action between HMS Creole and Astrea and 2 French frigate during which John Eveleigh was killed, Knight is appointed captain of HMS Astrea.
