Description

Folios 197-198: Edward Killwick, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Because he saw false charges against a Naval officer printed in a newspaper published by Thomas Billings the previous day, he felt it his duty to write and try to correct the record. Encloses a copy of his letter and [not present] the newspaper. Hopes the Admiralty can punish those who have published this account.

Folios 199-200: enclosed with folios 197-198. Admiralty minute in response to Commander Edward Killwick's letter, saying the officer who ordered a Marine to fire towards the shore acted wrongly.

Folios 201-202: enclosed with folios 197-198. Copy of a letter from Commander Edward Killwick, HMS Princess, Liverpool, to the editor of Thomas Billings' newpaper, 24 April 1810. Wishes to correct the account published the previous day. While his ships's company was at Sunday prayers, he heard several musket shots. When he went on deck he found that the Countess of Chester had anchored near the Princess and sent a party of about 50 men ashore in boats armed with cutlasses and pistols. The officers on deck first warned the boats and then ordered the sentinels to fire their muskets but to avoid hitting the boats. One of the bullets wounded a woman standing on the sea wall.
