Description

Folios 371-372: Edward Killwick, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Encloses copy of letter received from Mr Finchett, Harbor Master at Liverpool together with copy of his letter to the Navy Board. In his letter points out the great inconvenience if the request was complied with in the moorings for the Princess being down in Sloyne Road.

Folios 373-374: enclosure with folios 371-372. Letter from Edward Killwick, HMS Princess Liverpool to the Navy Board dated 14 November 1804. Encloses copy of letter received that day from Mr Finchett, Harbour Master at Liverpool in which he requests the Princess moorings should be in Sloyne Road on the Cheshire side of the river which is a considerable distance above Liverpool. Sets out various reasons for not being moored in Sloyne Road - the effects of winter storms in that part of the river, would allow merchantmen opportunity of land men without being seen and smuggling men on board when outward bound. Suggest the Princess is moored where she was previously for four years and sets out the reasons for this. Requests order to lay the moorings either where they were before or a little higher up or lower down on the Liverpool side, whichever may be most agreeable to the Harbour Master.

Folio 375: enclosure with folios 371-372. Letter from James Finchett, Harbour Master and Water Bailiff, Liverpool to Captain Edward Killwick, HMS Princess dated 11 November 1809. Acknowledges receipt of Captain Killwick's letter of 7 November with letter from Honourable Commissioners of Navy. Believes the Sloyne is, in his opinion, the best anchorage for the Princess. It is most secure part of the River Mersey and will prevent the inconvenience arising from her laying opposite to or near the entrance into the Docks.
