Description

Folios 355-356: Andrew King, HMS Venerable, Chatham. Lists the names of men who lost their bedding by the fall of the Main and Mizen Mast of HMS Venerable. Requests that the Navy Board is asked to allow them to be supplied with bedding without being charged. Lists the names of 39 men and 9 Marines.

Folios 357-358: enclosure with folios 355-356. Note dated 11 November. Acquaint him that their Lordships cannot comply with his request being of opinion that the men's hammocks ought to have been removed previously to the masts being cut away.

Folios 359-360: enclosure with folios 355-356. Document dated 11 November 1809. There is not any instance of bedding having been allowed, when lost by an accident, like that which related to the Venerable nearer than the following - which relates to the shipwreck of the Leda - when she was wrecked at Milford, 2nd April 1808. Their Lordships in consideration of the loss sustained by the company of the Leda, on the above mentioned occasion directed the Navy Board to supply each man with a suit of [?] clothing and bedding gratis A precedent in the case of the Venerable may lead to great charges hereafter. Some bedding was allowed to seamen absent from their proper ships in Basque Roads and employed in fireships but that case does not apply. Rear Admiral Domett.
