Description

Folios 251-252: Edward Durnford King, Kew. As directed in Admiralty letter of 29 July reports on the circumstances of the desertion of Robert Galbraith. Having received £200 prize money, he applied for order to discharge him from the service on providing two substitutes but was unable to procure them prior to the Endymion sailing from Spithead. On her way to Cadiz she touched at Lisbon and in consequence of the great anxiety, Galbraith had expected to get his discharge and return to England, decided to take him on shore to give him opportunity to try and find substitutes on his promise to return to the boat whatever happened. He did not return and a search was made by Mr Gambier [?], the Consul, and police officers but he had not been discovered when the Endymion sailed and thus did not rejoin. Believe he was determined to return to England whatever the risks. Had he given himself up to Mr Gambin he would have been sent back to England on HMS Crescent, then in the Tagus, or sent to the Endymion off Cadiz, where [Mr Gambier?] knew she was going.
