Description

Folios 234-234A: Edward Killwick, HMS Princess, Liverpool. States that Captain Horton, Regulating Officer, at Liverpool has forwarded to him Admiralty letter of 13 July requesting he report on the enclosed documents. Confirms that William English, aged 19 years, came as a volunteer substitute for Richard Williams. As requested returns documents.

Folio 235: enclosure with folios 234-234A. Letter from William Courtoy, East India House to Admiralty dated 13 July 1809. Encloses Affidavit of Aaron English stating that William English his son, was aged about 17 years when impressed. He was quietly following his pursuits on shore and had never been to sea. Requests he is discharged.

Folio 236: enclosure with folios 234-234A. Affidavit of Aaron English sworn at Heaton Norris on 10 July 1909 before I. Philips, Justice of the Peace for the County. [Lancashire is written at top of affidavit]. Confirms that Aaron English, father of William English, aged 17 years personally appeared before him and made oath on the Holy Evangelists as follows. His son, William English was impressed at Liverpool when making enquiries for a relation of his. A sailor came up and pretended to know the relation and immediately took him to the Rendezvous, and then on board the Princess. He says his son never saw a ship before and was born on 23 March 1792. He is detained on the Princess at Liverpool and has not entered voluntarily into the Service, or received the Bounty.
