Description

Folios 230-231: Edward Kittoe, Regulating Officer, Southampton. Acknowledges receipt of Admiralty letter of 26 September together with one from Ralph Potts and affidavit requesting discharge of William Carse, Carpenter of the Star. States that William Carse was impressed whilst drinking in an alehouse in Southampton on the night of 19 August. On the way to Rendezvous knocked down the Man of the Gang and made his escape to his ship which was alongside the quay. He was pursued, captured and next day forwarded to the fleet.

Folios 232-233: enclosure with folios 230-231. Letter from Ralph Potts, Gun Tavern, Thames Street to the Admiralty dated 1 September 1809. States he is the Master of the Star of Sunderland and that when it was laying at Southampton told the Carpenter, William Cass, he might go on shore and get some porter at the public house near the ship. This he did returning on board at half past eight. When on board some men belonging to the Impress Service went on his ship, without any midshipman or other officer, and took him to the Rendezvous notwithstanding he was told he might go on shore until 9 o'clock. Requests his discharge.

Spelling of Carpenter's name different in both letters.
