Description

Folios 223-224: Edward Killwick, HMS Princess. Encloses letter from R. D. Lane, ship's Purser, stating the problems he has in being allowed money for a complement of eight seven men with the expense of necessaries being equal to that of a largest class frigate who is allowed nearly three times that sum. Mr Lane's expenses are certainly very great, but it must be up to the Admiralty whether they will be pleased to give extra money for the supernumeraries who are on board.

Folios 225-226: enclosure with folios 223-224. Letter from Richard D. Lane, Purser, HMS Princess, Liverpool dated 18 September 1809. States only allowed to draw money for the Princess for a complement of 87 men but has the expense equal to that of the largest class frigate which is allowed nearly three times the sum. Requests that Captain Killwick asks the Admiralty to either augment the sum allowed or allow him to draw every quarter for the number of supernumeraries victualled for the preceding quarter according to the allowance set out in the Naval Instructions instead of waiting until his accounts are passed. The latter would mean his laying out the money from his own pocket and only have his own pay as a Purser to subsist on.
