Description

Folios 211-212: Richard Goodwin Keats, HMS Superb, Cape Sainte Marie. Reporting that HMS Venerable and Superb arrived off Cadiz, and Captain Hood is off Faro, intending to communicate. The number of enemy ships fitting out at Cadiz exceeds the British by three. Two French frigates were enabled to get into Cadiz. HMS Carmen in want of water and provisions was ordered into Gribraltar. HMS Agincourt and Madras will reach the Straits and Captain Keats will join them as soon as he has put this letter on board the Sea Horse.

Folios 213-214: enclosure with folios 211-212. Report no. 1. Statement of the Men of War in Cadiz as reconnoitred by the Superb on 6th, 7th June 1801. [copy]

Folios 215-216: enclosure with folios 211-212. Report no. 2. The American brig Alert was boarded by the Superb on the 5th, 2 days out from St Lucas bound for Hamburg. The Master saw not less than 1200 marines and several thousand seamen passing through on their way to Cadiz to man the Spanish ships.

Folio 217-218: enclosure with folios 211-212. Letter by Richard Goodwin Keats on the Superb off Cadiz. Unable to extract information on the ships in Cadiz from fishermen. The Ferrol squadron has arrived. The French are fitting ships with guns. Thousands of French officers and seamen have arrived in Cadiz. Morena is in command. Peace has been made with Portugal. Mr Parmell noted a contradiction in information about numbers of troops and seamen of the Ferol squadron caused partly by the dismantling of three Portuguese Brazilian ships.

Folios 219-220: enclosure with folios 211-212. A representation of the ensign which the Spanish ships in the French service will hoist when they take to sea.

Folios 221-222: enclosure with folios 219-220. A cardboard representation of the ensign of the Spanish ships.
