Description

Folios 27-28: William Hancock Kelly, HMS Veteran, Hamoaze. He writes that following the death of Moses Chapman, his carpenter, he needs a replacement. Mr Thomas Jefford, now aboard HMS Medway having made an exchange with Mr Thomas Blackhouse Dixon, now on HMS Argonaut has been recommended to him. He therefore asks that he be appointed to his vessel. He adds, however, that it would be wrong of him not to recommend also Mr James Bonthorn who is now acting carpenter on HMS Veteran, having previously been appointed by Captain Robert McDouall (also named Robert McDougall) of HMS Ganges. he encloses the relevant order from Captain McDougall. This order appointed Mr Bonthorn as Carpenters Mate on HMS Ganges, Since he has been on HMS Veteran he has shown particular diligence and attention to duty and great skill and so he recommends him for promotion.

Folios 29-30: enclosure to folios 27-28. Order from Captain Robert McDouall (also named Robert MaDougall) of HMS Ganges dated 3 September 1796 addressed to James Bunthorn appointing him acting carpenter on HMS Veteran in place of Mr Moses Chapman deceased. He is to be allowed such wages and food appropriate to his post.
