Folios 17-18: Richard Goodwin Keats, HMS Galatea, Cawsands Bay. He acknowledges receipt of their letter of 14 June enclosing the petition of Lieutenant Carrington of the Marines. He has no grounds for objecting to the request in the petition nor to the Admiralty extending clemency towards him. He does add however that at no time was he confined to his cabin but had always been free to walk on the quarter deck.
Folios 19-20: enclosure to folios 17-18. A letter from the Admiralty under the signature of Evan Nepean to Captain R.G.Keats dated 14 June 1796. The letter encloses the petition to the Admiralty of Lieutenant Carrington (not enclosed). Clearly the lieutenant is apologising for his behaviour and asks that he be restored to his post. Also enclosed is one from his commanding officer Major General Bowater (also not enclosed.) The Admiralty asks Captain Keats if he has any objection to what is proposed.
