Folios 238-239: Richard Hawkins, HMS Minerva, Downs. States Mr [James] Carter, Master's Mate of HMS Minerva having severed with him nearly seven years when ha has served in charge of a watch in the absence or illness of a Lieutenant he encloses a letter from him with a certificate [not present] of his service and request this be presented to the Admiralty.
Folios 240-241: enclosure folios 238-239. Letter dated 14 April 1814 by James Carter, Master's Mate, HMS Minerva to the Admiralty. Covering letter for a certificate [not present] of servitude and an acting order from Captain Richard Hawkins to serve as Lieutenant in HMS Minerva. He states he passed his examination as Lieutenant in November 1812. he served in two general actions (Vis) off Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1809 in HMS Blenheim (Certificate from her unfortunately lost) also the action off Camperdown in HMS Monmouth in the same year.
