Description

Folios 199-201: John Hayes, HMS Majestic. at Sea [Position given]. As ordered by His Excellency Sir John Borlase Warren Bart and KB He reports the American Ship of War Constitution escaped out of the Port of Boston on the 31 December 1813 and that he is now in pursuit of her. Previous to his leaving the Coast of America he discovered by the Public Papers that Commodore John Rodgers in the President, had put to sea from Newport on 4 December 1813 and that the Congress American Frigate had arrived at Portsmouth after an unsuccessful cruise of eight months, having in that period captured only four vessels of little value. He also gained information from a licenced American Brig that the United States sailed from New London about the middle of December, so that the three largest Ships of War belonging to Americans are now at Sea. [Total of three sides. Mentions:-] Fayal, St Michaels [Sao Miguel Island], the France Islands, Leeward Islands, Sir Francis Laforey, HMS Sultan and HMS Eridanus, Madeira Roads, La Terpsichore French Frigate he captures on 3 January 1814, her sister ship [L']Atalante Frigate made her escape. Reports no less than 30 French Frigates now at Sea, Admiral Manley Dixon.

Folios 201-202: enclosure with folios 199-201. [Report, similar to above with some details] Dated 5 February 1814 To Sir John Borlase Warren Bart and KB. [Mentions First Lieutenant Mr William Smith who was put in charge of La Terpsichore. Gives details of the French ships La Terpsichore and L'Atalante]
