Description

Folios 175-176: William Wilmot Henderson, HMS Dasher, Carlisle Bay, Barbados. States that Corporal Royal Marine Thomas Saxon (of the 177 Company, Woolwich Division) of HMS Dasher having been reduced on 12 October 1813 for drunkeness, fighting and planting a Centinel who was drunk. He then requested the promotion of John Patterson, (Private Royal Marine of the 177 Company, Woolwich Division) a very deserving good man in his room. On receiving the enclosed letter from Major General Burn (enclosed) He has to request they will confirm John Patterson from the date of Corporal Saxon being reduced, to appear on the Muster Book of HMS Dasher fro these three months as he only received Major General Burn's letter a few days ago.

Folio 177: enclosure with folios 176-176. Letter dated 15 October 1813 by J Coryton, Adjutant, Royal Marines Barracks, Woolwich to Captain William Wilmot Henderson, HMS Dasher. He is directed by Major General Burn ro reply to your letter of 12 October 1813 that unless Corporal [Thoms] Saxon was reduced by an order from the Admiralty he cannot be considered as reduced at Head Quarters, it being contrary to the rules of the Service & consequently the Major General cannot promote [John] Patterson.
