Description

Folios 236-237: Robert Honeyman, HMS Sceptre in Falmouth Harbour. Encloses documents from the Court of Enquiry held on HMS Thistle to find out what caused an"extraordinary desertion."

Folios 238-239: enclosure with folios 236-237. Captain White, HMS Thistle. Descriptions of Thomas Cheatham, William Stevenson, James Taylor and John Howard who took the Jolly Boat and deserted while on Sentinel Watch on Sunday 21 March 1813. They landed under St. Mawes Castle where the boat was found on the rocks.

Folio 240: enclosure with folios 236-237. Captain White, HMS Thistle. Descriptions of William Johnson, Thomas Sullivan, Dennis Carney and James Pounds who deserted from the Dockyard Saturday 20 March 1813.

Folios 241-242: enclosure with folios 236-237. Letter dated 22 March 1813 by Captain White, HMS Thistle to Captain Honeyman. Asks Captain Honeyman to hold an inquiry into desertions fom his ship; the first by 4 men sent with the Master to get planks to repair the capstan, the other 4 who deserted while on Watch. He is unable to understand it other than to comment on the lack of officers on this class of ship.

Folios 243-244: enclosure with folios 236-237. Report of the Captains of HMS Ethalion, HMS Porcupine and HMS Rifleman following the inquiry. No cause of complaint on account of ill treatment was found or any cause of dissatisfaction was found amongst the ships company.
