Description

Folios 203-204: George Harris, Bellemonte Lodge and late of HMS Sir Francis Drake. Responds to a letter dated 26 February with respect to his request for expenses for bringing Admiral Stopford's dispatches to the Admiralty Office which stated that there was insufficient reason to alter the usual rate and scale of allowances. Concludes that his prior statement of expenses was mislaid and encloses a further copy. Advises that HMS Phoebe was off Wolf Rock and with the wind from ESE, he hired a pilot vessel on the advice of Captain Hillyar so he could land at the nearest landing place. Because of the wind, Captain Hillyar had taken a Pilot to bear away to Scilly. On landing at midnight it was necessary to employ a guide to reach a Farmer's House, where he hired horses, and then onto Penzance. The cost of the post chaise journey from Penzance to Admiralty Office was higher because it was a Sunday.

Folio 205: enclosed with folios 203-204. Statement by Captain George Harris, late Captain of HMS Sir Francis Drake of expenses incurred in delivering dispatches of Rear Admiral Robert Stopford. Includes the hire of a pilot vessel from HMS Phoebe, hire of horses for trip to Penzance and Post Chaise and four from Penzance to the Admiralty's Office.
