Folios 255-256: Henry Hotham, HMS Defiance, Cawsand Bay. John Russell Corporal of the 2nd Company of the Portsmouth Division of Royal Marines embarked on board HMS Defiance having been directed by him to act as Sergeant of the detachment on 7 July 1809 in the room of Sergeant Thomas Scholton of the Portsmouth Division who deserted at Corunna, and an objection having been made by Lieutenant General Elliot, Commanding that Division, to his confirmation as Serjeant, on his application, without directions from the Admiralty, on account of his having been reduced from the rank of Sergeant in May 1803; as he has served on HMS Defiance nearly since that time, the four last years of which under his command, and conducted himself in all respects to his entire satisfaction. Requests he be promoted to Sergeant.
