Folios 241-242: George Hope. [Admiralty note?]"In order to obviate the inconvenience that might arise in the event of a Commander in Chief of His Majesty's Ships and Vessels, having a Captain of the Fleet under him being killed in action or otherwise disabled from retaining the commands of the Squadron and the second in command or other Flag Officer or Senior Officer not being on the spot we have thought fit to authorise you and you are hereby required and directed in the event of death of Sir James Saumarez [Lord James Saumarez (1st Baron de Saumarez)] or of his being at any time disabled from retaining the command of the Fleet under his orders, or of his absence, or the absence of the second in command or the Flag Officer and provided you shall be the senior officer present to hoist a Broad Pendant and to take command of the fleet until you shall be joined by the Flag Officer succeeding to the command or a senior Captain second in command or senior Flag Officer belonging thereto."
