Description

Folios 255-256: Joshua Sydney Horton, Liverpool Regulating Captain. Reply to letter 13 September. Thomas Whittle age 15 born in Tonge, Lancashire volunteer denied he was an apprentice. Robert Shimmings impressed, age 20 said he was born in New York. No protection. Produced an out of date indenture from Ireland. Nicholas Selkirk age 28 born North Shields. Said he was Creon of Liverpool’s Mate. Appointed three days ago. His certificate was dated 21 August 1809. Impressed under collusive circumstances. Richard Kimbell age 15 born Macclesfield, a volunteer denied he was an apprentice and brought a man he said was his father who wanted the bounty money. Solomon Dawson age 18 born Blackburn denied being an apprentice. John Pullain age 18 born Hull entered as substitute for John Penry. Instructed to receive two substitutes. John Fisher arrived on 11th. James Walker impressed age 18 born Liverpool arrived in the Benson. Produced indenture dated 16 October 1805 but said he’d been at sea four years. George Dyer, age 26 born Charlestown produced enclosed protection altered to suit him. Andrew Ervin age 24 said he was born in America. From Ireland obtained an American protection. Said he’s a shoemaker. Henry Matthews age 22 born in Baltimore. Didn’t answer to protection. Lives in Liverpool and been to West Indies. His name isn’t Matthews of Mather. Returns enclosures.

Folios 257-258: enclosed in folios 255-256. Philadelphia protection no.15669 for Henry Matthew, age 20, has H.M. in India ink on his right thumb [tattoo?] Signed John Geoff, Deputy Collector Philadelphia, 18 May 1807.

Folios 259-260: enclosed in folios 255-256. Barnstable [Mass.] protection for George Dyer, age 17 is a US citizen, Signed Joseph Doane Deputy Collector, 13 May 1800.

Folios 261-262: enclosed in folios 255-256. New York protection for Andrew Ervin, age 24 born Jenkintown New York, signed David Gelston, Collector, New York, 13 June 1809.

Folios 263-264: enclosed in folios 255-256. James Lomax, Old Aires, Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, 11 September 1809. His apprentice Thomas Whittle volunteered onto HMS Princess 5 September. Requests enclosed indenture is returned with his discharge.

Folios 265-266: enclosed in folios 255-256. Penelope Shemmings, 32 Mercy Street, Liverpool. Petition for son Robert Shemmings age 15 impressed Friday. A widow, he contributes to her four children. Requests to find an able bodied landsman substitute.

Folios 267-268: enclosed in folios 255-256. Ruth Selkirk, 37 Kitchening Street [Kitchen?] Liverpool, 12 September 1809. Petition for her husband Nicholas Selkirk impressed on HMS Princess. Left with four fatherless children. Her sister a widow with six children one at Blue School one at the workhouse. Sole careers of her father age 67. Requests to supply a replacement.

Folios 269-270: enclosed in folios 255-256. Moses Dale, Macclesfield, 12 September 1809. Repeat petition regarding his apprentice Richard Kimbell.

Folios 271-272: enclosed in folios 255-256. Thomas Beans [?], Liverpool, 12 September 1809. Sends the indenture of Solomon Dawson one of his apprentices. Absconded and volunteered. Requesting his discharge.

Folios 273-274: enclosed in folios 255-256. William Petty, 29 White Castle, Liverpool, 11 September 1809. Send indenture for John Pullins apprentice who eloped from his parents and is onboard HMS Princess. Requests his return.

Folios 275-276: enclosed in folios 255-256. Richard Walker, Temple Street, Liverpool, 12 September 1809. Asks to find a substitute for his impressed son James Walker age 18 apprentice to R. Benson. His eldest son went to sea but died at Jamaica last Christmas. Widower, 10 children, three daughters.
