Folios 156-157: Joshua Sydney Horton, Liverpool Regulating Captain. Reply to letter 4 September about impressed men: Thomas Ashton age 14 born Stockport volunteered; William Winder age 20 volunteered, a substitute for Norman McLellan positively denied being an apprentice; James Davidson alias George Dewent age 25 impressed in name of Dewent said he sailed for America when young and doesn’t know where he was born. Had Charleston protection; Peter Borthwick age 24 born Liverpool was recognized as being sent to Plymouth four years ago only didn’t have a discharge ticket. Surgeon said he’s fit. On the Crescent’s register as Master although he could neither read nor write; Patrick Mclusky age 22 born Londonderry had no certificate or bond as Mate for Postlethwaite. Returns enclosures.
Folios 158-159: enclosed in folios 156-157. P. Ashton, Physician, Stockport, 21 September 1809. Petitions for son age 13 a sickly and puny constitution decoyed into the Press’s hands. Has six children at home. Is educating another son for sea service who’s impatient to emulate Shovell or Blake.
Folios 160-161: enclosed in folios 156-157:. Thomas Murrow, Liverpool, 2 September 1809. Encloses affidavit relating to William Winder who recently deserted his master. Requests his discharge.
Folio 162: enclosed in folios 160-161. William Hawkins, Shoemaker, Liverpool, 2 September 1809. Affidavit signed Thomas Molynuex JP. William Winder age 13, grandson of William Cooke, Weaver, Liverpool. Indentured shoemaker 3 June 1805 till leaving to enter onboard HMS Princess.
Folios 163-164: enclosed in folios 156-157. George Gilchrist, Liverpool, 2 September 1809. Acknowledging letter 30 August. Petitions James Davidson, Mate, the Lydia brig at the rendezvous. Say Davidson had an American protection filled out by George Devent and the keys to the vessel and books which prevents her being discharged. Has a wife and children. Request his release.
Folios 165-166: enclosed in folios 156-157. Ann Bothwick, 15 Liver Street, Liverpool, 1 September 1809. Her husband Peter Borthwick discharged from HMS Salvador del Mundo in July 1805 because of fits. Supports three children and mother. Requests providing a substitute.
Folios 167-168: enclosed in folios 156-157. Shipley Williams & Wilson, Liverpool, 2 September 1809. Patrick McClosky, Mate of Postlewaite of Maryport arrived with valuable cargo from St Croix [US Virgin Islands]. From Captain Smiths affidavit only discharged three puncheons of rum and needing Mate to sign bills of lading.
Folio 169: enclosed in folios 167-168. John Smith, Master, the Postlewaite, 2 September 1809. Affidavit before Thomas Golightly JP. Sailed from Santa Cruz [Tenerife?]. Patrick McClosky employed as Chief Mate kept accounts and log book. Impressed, custody at Bird Street and needed to discharge vessel’s cargo.
