Folios 136-137: Sir Henry Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol. Sends copies of dispatches to Lord Gambier.
Folios 139-140: enclosed in folios 136-137. Captain Hotham, HMS Defiance, Corunna to Captain [Henry Edward] Reginald Barker, HMS Indefatigable. Instructed to bring Spanish fleet from Ferrol to Cadiz. Messages can be got to Britain from Corunna especially while Marquis de la Romana is present. Ordered to remain at Coruna, obtain intelligence and assist Spanish patriots against France. Put the anchors left during last January’s evacuation onto the Nelson transport once the Consul’s obtained permission. Convoy to England.
Folios 141-142: enclosed in folios 136-137. Captain Hotham to HMS Amelia, Ferrol, 16 August 1809. Lists named Spanish Generals and Archbishop who arrived on HMS Defiance from Gijón. The General said Archbishop of Zaragoza Don Josef Ramon was a prisoner of the State.
Folios 143-144: enclosed in folios 136-137. John Gale, David Taylor and J. Jerrard, Carpenters, HMS Defiance, Barfleur and Norge to Captain Hotham. Survey of HMS Amazon after she grounded at Ferrol harbour. Says whilst she takes in water she’s sea worthy.
Folios 145-146: enclosed in folios 136-137:. Captain William Parker, HMS Amazon from Captain Hotham, 13 August 1809. To take Captain Frederick Irby, HMS Amelia to assist the Marquis de la Romana with his attack on Santander. If he doesn’t he’s to give Captain F. P. Irby orders. He’s to cruze between Santander and Cape Machichaco [Matxitxako] preventing the enemy landing supplies till his provisions are expended with enough to get to Plymouth and refit.
Folios 147-148: enclosed in folios 136-137. Admiral Gambier from Captain Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol, 23 August 1809. Reports the Marquis de la Romana left Coruna 5 August to attack Santander. Sent two frigates to assist. HMS Amazon and HMS Amelia who short on supplies was provisioned by HMS Barfleur who’d arrived from Lisbon. Captain Irby, HMS Amelia brought the Spanish general Count of Villanueva and the Archbishop of Saragosa from Gijon with other prisoners who were put onboard the Magdalena Spanish frigate and sent to Cadiz.
Folios 149-150: enclosed in folios 136-137. Captain Hotham to Captain Frederick Paul Irby, HMS Amelia, 13 August 1809. To sail between Cape Machichaco and Bayonne obtaining intelligence and prevent enemy supplies landing.
