Description

Folios 130-131: Graham Eden Hamond, HMS Victorious, Flushing. Acknowledging letter 30 August with letter from Benjamin Mansfield a Marine on HMS Victorious. Report into his complaint against Lieutenant Davis. Says Davis opened Mansfield’s letter when he was accidentally out of the ship and was shown it next morning.

Folios 132-133: enclosed in folios 130-131. Letter dated 4 September 1809 by Lieutenant Richard Davis, HMS Victorious, Flushing to Captain Hamond. Threw Mansfield’s kettle of fish overboard 12 May after repeated orders not to keep fish or victuals on the lower deck except at mealtimes. Judged it most efficient mode of prevention to throw out utensils lying about contrary to ship rules. Found two kettle before ship piped for supper, Charles Panot’s Boatswains Mate and Benjamin Mansfield’s. He knows nothing of Thomas Hughes’s Court Martial or the charges. Orders Boatswain’s Mate to give Mansfield a starting with the rope end after directing the watch on anchoring. Admits his error. Disclaims all knowledge of striking him on 12 June. Opened letter to Admiralty as had no name on it and the sentry knew nothing of it.
