Description

Folios 267-268: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reports that Edward Kershaw, born at Rochdale, was impressed by Lieutenant Hyde John Clarke on 22 July. He said he Master of the flat called the Hawke, but he had no protection and John Turncliffe was protected as Master of that flat in May 1808 with William Sykes as his hand. John Quin was impressed on 27 July with no protection but claiming to belong to an Irish fishing boat. Yesterday he received the enclosed certificate [not present] from Captain Sandford Tatham of the Sea Fencibles [at Malaheide] with a letter from Quin's father seeking his discharge.

Folios 269-270: enclosed with folios 267-268. Letter dated 2 August 1809 from Messrs Henry Hinckley & Co, 28 King Street, Cheapside to the Admiralty. Encloses a letter for their Lordships' consideration

Folios 271-272: enclosed with folios 267-268. Letter dated 3 August 1809 signed by Henry Hinckley and Willis Wilkinson, 28 King Street, Cheapside to the Admiralty. Write on behalf of Messrs M de Jongh & Co, Liverpool, to ask for the discharge of Edward Kershaw, Master of the flat Hawk belonging to the Leeds Union Company. He was impressed before he could transfer the former Master's protection to his own name.

Folio 273:enclosed with folios 267-268. Affidavit sworn by John Simpson before James Gerard, Mayor of Liverpool. 31 July 1809. Testifies that the flat Hawke, belonging to the Leeds Union Company, provided a man for the Navy when John Turnicliffe was Master, and that after he left Edward Kershaw took over as Master.
