Description

Folios 580-581: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Responding to the letter of 10 May. Robert Brash, born in Greenock, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 19 April as an Ordinary Seaman. He sailed to the Brazils in the Tartar of Liverpool, and returned on the same voyage as a Steward at £4 per month. He never claimed to be an apprentice. James Arbleson, born in Workington, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 30 April as an Ordinary Seaman. The enclosed Indenture [not present] was produced , dated 13 February 1805, which suggested that he had served 4 years at sea. No Certificate of Baptism was produced, nor any claim made on account of age, and he himself acknowledged that he was age 18. John Hardman, born in Liverpool, entered with Lieutenant Baly on 1 May as a Landsman Volunteer. He persistently denied being an apprentice. John Kisley, born in Africa, and stated on the application to be a black boy called Jack, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 4 May as an Ordinary Seaman. He arrived in the Scorpion from New Providence as Steward at £4 per month and was included in the ship's articles as such. Anthony Brown, born in Whitehaven, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 17 April as an Able Seaman, He said he was Mate of the Peggy and Ellen. He was taken from a house of ill repute at 9:30 at night. James McKey, born in Scotland, was pressed by Lieutenant Evans on 7 May as an Able Seaman. He said he was the Mate of the Jeannot of Greenock. He was taken on shore at 9 o'clock at night. Samuel Marshland. born in Derbyshire, entered with Lieutenant Clarke on 24 April as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for Donald Nicholson. Joseph Hancock, born in Newcastle under Line [Lyme], entered with Lieutenant Baly on 24 April as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for John Morrison. He declared he was not an apprentice. He returns the enclosures, Also sends the weekly return of man raised at Liverpool [not present].

Folios 582-583: enclosure with folios 580-581. Letter dated 8 May 1809 from Robert Brash, HMS Princess, Liverpool to The Admiralty. He was bound as an apprentice to Messrs Robertson Forsyth & Co of Greenock for 3 years. He has only been on a voyage to the Brazils. The vessel then sailed without him and he came to Liverpool to join her. He was pressed on the day the ship was due to sail. Requests his discharge on producing a substitute.

Folios 584-585: enclosure with folios 580-581. Covering letter for folios 586-588 dated 5 May 1809 from Ben Thompson, Workington, to The Admiralty.

Folios 586-587: enclosure with folios 584-585. Undated petition to The Admiralty from Robert Wallace, Master of the brig Sarah of Workington, County of Cumberland, for the release of the apprentice James Arbelson. The Indenture and an Affidavit are enclosed [not present]. These were presented to the Regulating Captain, but he refused to release the man. The enclosed certificate of baptism confirms his age as under 17 years.

Folio 588: enclosure with folios 584-585. Copy of Certificate of Baptism taken from the 1804 Parish Register of Workington, 4 May 1809, by Anthony Dalzell, Officiating Minister. James, son of Robert Arbelson and Mary, his wife, born 9th November 1792, baptised 25 November 1804.

Folios 589-59-: enclosure with folios 580-581. Letter dated 8 May 1809 from John Topham, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Encloses an Indenture of Apprenticeship [not present] for John Hardman, who has deserted from his master and is now on board HMS Princess. Requests his discharge.

Folios 591-592: enclosure with folios 584-585. Letter dated 7 May 1809 from A Cowan, 2 Frederick Street, St James, to The Admiralty. Requests the discharge of a black boy, pressed yesterday. He arrived with the ship Endeavour in June 1808 to learn the English language, and was intending to leave on the first ship that sailed. His English name is Jack, son of King Maniluemba of Loango, Coast of Angola.

Folios 593-594: enclosure with folios 584-585. Petition dated 8 May 1809 from Mary Brown, c/o Mrs Kennedy, 12 James Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty, for the release of her husband, Anthony Brown, Mate of the Peggy and Ellen, Captain William Rigg. Asks to know the conditions for his release.

Folios 595-596: enclosure with folios 584-585. Letter dated 8 May 1809 from John McKinlay, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Request for the release of Robert McKey, Mate of the sloop Robert and Jannet of Greenock, of which he is Master. He was ignorant of the regulations, not having been in Liverpool previously. Requests his discharge on payment of the necessary expenses.

Folios 597-598: enclosure with folios 584-585. Letter dated 8 May 1809 from Thomas Hughes, Town Clerks Office, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. He has been requested by Richard Buckley, of Carr Brook, within Stealey, Cheshire, to send the enclosed Indenture of Apprenticeship [not present] for Joseph Marshland, for a period of 7 years. The apprentice has deserted and was pressed after arrival in Liverpool. Requests his discharge.

Folio 599: enclosure with folios 584-585. Form dated 10 May 1809. Applications for the Discharge of Pressed Men, relating to Joseph Hancock, entered approximately 3 weeks earlier, from John Tilstone, Agent to the Master. Document produced is the Indenture [not present].
